Pretty Pinwheel Doily: A Free Crochet Pattern for You

Today I have  a fun little pattern for you. The Pretty Pinwheel Doily is small and works up quickly, but the pinwheel gives it an unusual and whimsical style all its own. I think it is a great design for experimenting  with different color combinations. I hope you will enjoy it!

Doily
Rnd 1: With color A, ch 8, sl st in first ch to form ring, ch 3, 23 dc in ring, join with sl st in top of ch-3. Fasten off. (First ch-3 counts as first dc; 24 dc made)

Rnd 2: Join color B with sc in first st, sc in each dc around, join with sl st in first sc.

Rnd 3: Ch 1, sc in each of first 2 sts, ch 20, (sc in each of next 2 sc, ch 20) around, join.

Rnd 4: Sl st in second sc, (sl st, ch 3, 11 dc, ch 2, 12 dc) in first ch-20 sp, (12 dc, ch 2, 12 dc) in each remaining ch-20 sp around, join with sl st in top of ch-3. Fasten off.

IMPORTANT NOTE: You will notice that the 12  ‘points’ of the Pinwheel have a natural tendency to twist. In the following round, you will twist each point and work into the   ch-3 sp at the center top of the point. The wrong side of the stitches on the previous 2 rounds will be facing you as you work Rnd 7.  Make sure that you twist each point in the same direction!
Twist each point as shown in photo when working Rnd 7

Rnd 10: Ch 1, sc in joining sp, *(ch 3, 3 tr cluster) 6 times in next ch-10 sp, (ch 3, sc in next ch-5 sp) 2 times; repeat from * around, join with sl st in first sc. Fasten off.

Finishing
Place doily on blocking surface. Spray with starch, shape and allow to dry.

Rosina Smith made her doily in yellow and shaded purples; I think it is just stunning! Thank you, Rosina!

Jolene Ortiz created a gorgeous variation on this pattern by not twisting the points before working Rnd 7. I love it when folks get creative with my designs!

I just found this pattern... thank you for sharing it. I have a question on the size of the hook. When I googled the hook size it came up asking me if I meant a " 1.75"... is the size 7 1.65mm correct? And if so where did you find your hook? Thanks for your help

Ann said...

Vicki, I used a Boye size 7 steel hook, which is 1.65mm.

I absolutely LOVE this pattern! I have made 3 of them so far. I'm thinking of modifying it slightly to make smaller, coaster sized pieces to match! Thank you for this wonderful pattern. I'm going to send you pics of the ones I've done so far. Can't wait for you to see! :-)

What a beautiful pattern! I've never crocheted with thread before or used such a small hook. But I couldn't stop looking at the photos and how pretty the doilies turned out so I had to give it a try. I'm still googling "what to do with a doily" because I have no idea what to do with it when I'm finished :-)
