Recently, Diana Dwyer sent me these pictures of the Ruby's Valentine Doily that she had made. I loved her use of colors in the doily! She explained how she came to use this particular combination:

I couldn’t wait to try this pattern, so I went into
my "stash" of thread. I thought I’d have enough of the candy pink to do it, but after the
flower, I knew better. So I went back to my stash and found I had little bit left of 2
other pink shades. I didn't want it to look like I ran out of thread so this is what I came up with.
You did a beautiful job, Diana!
I will select the winner at random, and send out the patterns in the morning (Saturday.) I will post the name of the winner here, so be sure to check back in the morning to see if you won. If I do not hear back from the winner within 7 days, I will select a new winner. Failure to contact me within 7 days will result in the forfeiture of all prizes.
Also, if you post anonymously, please be sure I have a way to identify you (at least give your first name or a nick name in your comment; I have no way of knowing who is posting.) You can also leave your email address with your comment so I can notify you if you win, but this is optional.
To enter, just leave a comment here on the blog answering this question:
Do you usually use the colors called for in a pattern, or do you like to change things up and select your own color scheme?
This contest is now closed, please stop by again soon!

OH, wonderful doily! A pattern and a colour choice are stunning!
I usualy pick my own colours.
I almost always choose my own colors.
99% of the time I choose my own colors and hook size.
I usually use the specified colors if I have them. If not, I choose similar ones
I usually choose my own colors, but occasionally, I like the suggestions if I'm feeling less than creative. =) Thanks for the chance to win!
I usually like to choose my own color scheme.
I like to try different colors... especially bright and contrasting ones... Divonna Thornburg. (divonna@live.com)
Depends on who/what I'm making it for. I always love your color choices, so with your patterns I'd be less likely to change anything!
I usually go to my stash(craft stores are a good distance from my house)I will get as close as possible most of the time-
since craft stores are not to close(35 minute drive)I will usually get as close as I can with what I have on hand-or if I'm making it for someone elsa-I will try to get their color scheme-Diana dwyer
I hardly ever use the color/color scheme in patterns I make. I love arranging the colors to suit my style and my surroundings!
I rarely have access to the colours and threads suggested so I usually make it up as I go. I'm not very good at visualising how the colours will go together so it's a bit hit and miss, but more hits so far, thankfully!
I always use the colours I have in my stash. If I have the colours that are used in the pattern and they are the one's I also like, I use them. Here in The Netherlands we don't have much choise because crocheing doily's is old fashioned. Greetings Joke.
I like to choose my own colours usually but sometimes I copy the colour used in the design because it just looks so good.
If I like the colors I will follow the pattern, otherwise I use what I have. denise50fritz@hotmail.com
I try to use the thread that I already have in my stash, so I usually try to match my own colors. I make most of my doilies with ecru or white thread only though. I love the pinks doily that Diana made and would like to try one with similar colors. Thanks, Susan N.
I usually choose my own colors and select colors according to the occasion or the person I'm making that item for :) ...
I like to choose my own colors, since I'll be making it for my home.....but there are cases when the colors for the pattern shown, would be perfect for holidays , like thr Valentine doily. I always make the doilies the colors my friends and family prefer.....
Martha
