Dainty Cross Bookmark or Ornament

Skill Level: 

Intermediate —for those who are familiar with working with size 10 thread and steel hooks, and who have a thorough understanding of the basics of crochet

Size: About 4”

Materials: 

Size 10 Cotton Thread: 

10 yards of desired color
Heavy starch 

Size 7 (1.65mm) Steel Hook 

Special Stitches:

For Picot, (sc, ch 3, sc) in ch sp indicated

For Triple Picot, (sc, ch 3, sc, ch 5, sc, ch 3, sc) in ch sp indicated

Pattern Notes:

On Rnd 2, each time you work (ch 4, dc in 4^th ch from hook), you will be creating an eyelet space.

On Rnd 3, you will work into the eyelet spaces by inserting your hook between the ch-4 and the dc of each sp.

Cross

Rnd 1: Ch 4, sl st in first ch to form ring, ch 3, 2 dc in ring, ch 2, (3 dc in ring, ch 2) 3 times, join with sl st in top of ch-3.

Rnd 2: Ch 1, sc in same st as joining, sc in each of next 2 dc, *sc in next ch-2 sp, (ch 4, dc in 4^th ch from hook) 3 times, sc in same ch-2 sp last sc was worked in, sc in each of next 3 dc**; repeat between * and ** 2 more times, sc in next ch-2 sp, (ch 4, dc in 4^th ch from hook) 7 times, sc in same ch-2 sp last sc was worked in, join with sl st in first sc.

Rnd 3: (Sl st, ch 1, sc) in next sc (the second sc of Rnd 2), *ch 2, picot (see Special Stitches) in next eyelet sp, ch 3, triple picot (see Special Stitches) in next eyelet sp, ch 3, picot in next eyelet sp, ch 2, sc in center sc of next 3-sc group**; repeat between *and ** 2 more times, ch 2, (picot in next eyelet sp, ch 3) 3 times, triple picot in next eyelet sp, (ch 3, picot in next eyelet sp) 3 times, ch 2, join with sl st in first sc. Fasten off.

Finishing

Place Cross on blocking surface. Spray with starch, shape as desired. Allow to dry. If desired, a loop of crochet thread or ribbon may be added for hanging.

Flower Basket of Roses; A Free Crochet Pattern For You

Several years ago I designed a set of doilies for Annie's Attic called 'Vintage Floral Doilies.' The publishing rights have reverted back to me, and I am now happy to make these patterns available to you for free. I am adding the doilies in the set to the blog one at a time, and hopefully I will have them all available for you soon. 

These are my original patterns, so they are written differently from the ones AA published, but they are the same designs. 

Today, I have a pattern that was originally called "May Basket" for you. I have made a few changes to the original, but it is basically the same. I hope you will enjoy it! 

Flower Basket of Roses

Size: About 8 1/2” x 10” 

Materials: 
Size 10 Cotton Thread: 
200 yards Lt. Brown 
25 yards of each of five different Rose Colors (I used light pink, rose, shaded pinks, shaded rose, and red)
 50 yards each Green  and Blue
Fabric Glue
Heavy starch 
Size 7 (1.65mm) Steel Hook 

Special Stitches 
For Shell, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in st or ch sp indicated 
For Double Shell, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in st or ch sp indicated 

Basket
Notes:
The Basket begins with an Eyelet Foundation. If you are not familiar with this technique, you can read more about it here: Eyelet Foundation
To work ‘shell in shell’ work into the ch-2 sp at the center of the shell indicated
The bottom of the Basket will tend to curve until the item is blocked. 

Row 1: With Lt. Brown,  for Eyelet Foundation,  (ch 4, tr in 4th ch from hook) 7 times; ch 3, shell (see Special Stitches) in each ch sp across, turn. (7 shells made) 

Row 2: Ch 3, shell in first shell, (ch 1, shell in next shell) across, turn. 

Row 3: Ch 3, shell in first shell, (ch 2, shell in next shell) across, turn. 

Row 4: Ch 3, shell in first shell, (ch 3, shell in next shell) across, turn. 

Row 5: Ch 3, shell in first shell, (ch 3, 8 dc in next shell, ch 3, shell in next shell) across, turn. 

Row 6: Ch 3, shell in first shell, *ch 3, skip next ch sp, (sc in next dc, ch 3) 8 times, skip next ch sp, shell in next shell; repeat from * across, turn. 

Row 7: Ch 3, shell in first shell, *ch 3, skip next ch sp, (sc in next ch sp, ch 3) 7 times, skip next ch sp, shell in next shell; repeat from * across, turn. 

Row 8: Ch 3, shell in first shell, *[ch 3, skip next ch sp, (sc in next ch sp, ch 3) 6 times, skip next ch sp],  double shell (see Special Stitches) in next shell*; repeat between *and* once, repeat between [ ], shell in last shell, turn.  

Row 9: Ch 3, shell in first shell, *[ch 3, skip next ch sp, (sc in next ch sp, ch 3) 5 times, skip next ch sp], shell in each ch-2  sp of next double shell*; repeat between *and *, repeat between [ ], shell in last shell, turn. 

Row 10: Ch 3, shell in first shell, *[ch 3, skip next ch sp, (sc in next ch sp, ch 3) 4 times, skip next ch sp], shell in next shell, ch 3, shell in next shell*; repeat between *and*, repeat between [ ], shell in last shell, turn. 

Row 11: Ch 3, shell in first shell, *[ch 3, skip next ch sp, (sc in next ch sp, ch 3) 3 times, skip next ch sp], shell in next shell, ch 3, 3 dc in next ch sp, ch 3, shell in next shell*; repeat between *and *, repeat between [ ], shell in last shell, turn. 

Row 12: Ch 3, shell in first shell, *[ch 3, skip next ch sp, (sc in next ch sp, ch 3) 2 times, skip next ch sp], shell in next shell, ch 3, 2 dc in each of next 3 dc, ch 3, shell in next shell*; repeat between *and *, repeat between [ ], shell in last shell, turn. 

Row 13: Ch 3, shell in first shell, *[ch 3, skip next ch sp, sc in next ch sp, ch 3, skip next ch sp], shell in next shell, ch 3, skip next ch sp, dc in next dc, (ch 1, dc in next dc) 5 times, ch 3, skip next ch sp, shell in next shell*; repeat between *and *, repeat between [ ], shell in last shell, turn. 
Row 14: Ch 3, shell in each of first 2 shells, *ch 3, skip next ch sp,  2 dc in next dc, (ch 2, 2 dc in next dc) 5 times, ch 3, skip next ch sp, shell in each of next 2 shells; repeat from * across, turn.

Note: To Dc Sts Together: (Yo, insert hook in next st, yo, pull lp through, yo, pull through 2 lps on hook) in number of sts indicated, yo, pull through all lps on hook 
Row 15: Ch 3, shell in each of first 2 shells, *(ch 3, dc in 3rd ch from hook, dc next 2 sts tog-see Note) 6 times, ch 3, dc in 3rd ch from hook, shell in each of next 2 shells; repeat from * across.  

Row 16: For Handle, ch 3, shell in first shell; leaving remaining stitches unworked, turn.  

Rows 17- 58: Ch 3, shell in shell, turn.  At end of last row, fasten off. 

Rose (make one each of each Rose Color) 
Rnd 1: Ch 4, 9 dc in 4th ch from hook, join with sl st in top of ch-4. (First 3 chs count as first dc; 10 dc made) 

Rnd 2: Ch 1, sc in each st around, join with sl st in first sc. 

Rnd 3: Ch 1, sc in first st, ch 2, skip next st, (sc in next st, ch 2, skip next st) around, join with sl st in first sc. (5 ch sps) 

Rnd 4: For petals, (sl st, ch 2, 4 dc, ch 2, sl st) in each ch-2 sp around, join with sl st in first sl st. 

Rnd 5: Working behind petals and only in skipped sts of Rnd 2, ch 1, sc in first st, ch 4, (sc in next st, ch 4) around, join with sl st in first sc. 

Rnd 6: For petals, (sl st, ch 2, 6 dc, ch 2, sl st) in each ch-4 sp around, join with sl st in first sl st. 
Rnd 7: Working through stitches of petals made on last round into ch sps of Rnd 5, ch 2, (insert hook between 3rd and 4th dc of next petal, sc in ch sp, ch 4) around, join with sl st in first sc. 

Rnd 8: For petals, (sl st, ch 2, 8 dc, ch 2, sl st) in each ch-4 sp around, join. Fasten off.  

Leaf Spray (make 5)

Note: For Picot, (ch 3, sl st in 3^rd ch from hook)

With Green, ch 12, (3 tr, picot-see Note-3 tr, ch 4, sl st) in 6th ch from hook, sl st in next ch, ch 9, (3 tr, picot, 3 tr, ch 4, sl st) in 6th ch from hook, sl st in next 3 chs, ch 7, (3 tr, picot, 3 tr, ch 4, sl st) in 6th ch from hook, sl st in next ch, sl st in each remaining ch of beginning ch-12 for stem. Fasten off.

Bow
With Blue, ch 200, dc in 4th ch from hook, dc in each ch across. Fasten off. Tie into a bow.

Please note that the bottom of the Basket will bow up until it is blocked. 

Finishing 
1: Glue center of shell on last row of Handle to opposite side of Basket. 

2:  Spray all pieces with starch, shape and allow to dry.  The first row of the Basket will have a tendency to bow upwards, just pull it down and pin to the shape desired. 

3: Glue Roses, Leaf Sprays and Bow to Basket as shown in photo or as desired.
