Friday Contest (and knowing when to stop!)


Back in the Fall, I started working on a set of mini-doilies. They were quick and fun to make, and I was designing a couple every week or so. They were almost ready for testing, I just had to do some finishing touches on them, and do the photography.  I put them aside until after the Holidays, but after the first of the year I got busy with a new cape design. When I finally got back to my mini doilies, I decided I didn't like the colors I had been using, and remade most of them in a new color scheme. While I was working on the last one, I had an idea for another doily, which didn't really fit in with the rest of them, but was just too cute not to try. 
And while I was working on that one, I thought of another one I just had to make. 
And then, when I was shopping for a birthday gift for my daughter Robyn, I saw something that gave me an idea for a really awesome little doily, something I had never tried before. I came home and started working on it right away. It took me over a week, but I finally got it right, and I think it will be the 'star' of the set.  But, it doesn't quite fit in with all of the rest of the doilies. So I will have to re-do some of them. 
I am beginning to wonder if this set will ever get finished!
But I went through the same thing when I designed my "Ripples, Ruffles and Roses" doilies a few years ago. 
I guess that is just my designing process.

    Yes. I designed a hat pattern but never published it. Finally, after looking at it for months I decided to just do it. I got TONS of compliments on it and realized everyone likes something different, so even if I wasn't 100% on board with it, it was more my personal liking that an error that should have/needed to be fixed.

    oh goodness, all the time! make it, remake it, let it set, come back and decide to start all over from scratch... and a lot of my earlier designs I didn't ever write down what I did, so there was really no way to replicate it! I have learned to keep notes now! And actually save them... because what may have not worked this time, may very well be the inspiration for next time!

    Oh yes I have done the same thing. Early on when I first started working with bright colors on my own,(without using the exact color yarn the pattern called for)I made a Rainbow blanket which was just an easy granny stripe blanket. So I was in charge of the order my colors would appear. I finished it and since learning a little more about color I would have had my stripes in a totally different order than I did. But...My Daughter loved it so all was not lost. Thanks for the chance to win a pattern! I just love your blog.

    Yes! Sure have, I recently crocheted a dress in a colorway I thought was going to be gorgeous, but when I finished, it was just a bit off. I would have maybe switched the main color for the contrasting color and think that might have turned out more elegant. :) Thanks for the chance to enter! :)

    Many times projects fail as I would like, sometimes
    is the fault of cotton not suitable, sometimes the colors are not right, sometimes I'm wrong but ... patience in life no one is perfect!marid88

    Oh yes, I knitted a jacket for me just last year. I loved the pattern and had some orange colored wool in my stash. But now the jacket is finished but it just does not suit me from the colour ;-(. I wished I had went out and bougth a colour that fits to me ;-)

    i think this has happened to mose crocheters, i know it has to me. either the color is not quite right or i wish i had done something different with the patter. i do quite often change things and do them my own way.

    Oh absolutely! But I always blame it on being a perfectionist and have to just say, "It's complete, leave it alone! Walk away!"

    I think in some way I am too much of a perfectionist when it comes to my work...I always have to tell myself that it's not going into a museum, and that Ishould love my work as much as others do...:)

    All the time. I am currently making cat beds for a local charity and I had about 7 of them done before I decided that I wanted them a bit different. I took them all apart and started over. These are for cats... orphan cat! They are not going to care at all, they are just going to be happy to have something snuggly to sleep on.

    Oh my...all the time! I can see things in different colors, adding or subtracting a design element, using a different stitch or thread...the list goes on. When I design something I am constantly ripping it out to change it! I am never 100% happy with anything I make...even I can't live up to my standards of perfection! Lol!!!

    Whatbeautiful doilies! I cant recal lmaking anythign I didnt love when I finished it but once I crocheted a 70" tablecloth and realized the dye lot was differrent and had to unravel all the last bal I used.

    Many times. For example I crocheted a doily and I regreted that I didn't modify the pattern. There was something wrong and it was ruffling.

    Usually it boils down to color choices, but one time I made a vest and wished I'd used a bigger hook to get a slightly larger size. Janet K

    I believe we all have, working on baby afghan ran out of yarn and finished with yarn on hand. Did not come out good. So have it on dolls I have. Hope all have a great weekend.

    Oh, who hasn't had a better idea when it's too late. We can tweak away hours trying to get it just right I've never made anything that I haven't looked at and thought "I shoulda....."

    Yes and no. I have made alot of doilies, if there is something I don't like about it, I usually don't make it again. But if I like the doily, I will try it again in different colours to see how it looks.
